CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man died after getting an electric shock while trying to steal copper, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Thomas Freeman III, 46, died Wednesday night. Police said Freeman was shocked while cutting a live wire on a 35-foot pole on Double Oaks Road with a pair of bolt cutters. He fell about 30 feet to the ground and was then taken to Carolinas Medical Center by the two people he was with, according to police.

Freeman was pronounced dead at the hospital. He had burn marks on his body and markings on his clothing that was consistent with receiving an electric shock, police said.

A 40-foot ladder was found at the scene on Double Oaks Road and the copper wires attached to the poles showed a cut attempt, police said.

Investigators said the two other people were taken to police headquarters for questioning after the incident. Charges against those people, whose names have not been released, are pending, police said.
