Saxonburg Borough, PA OKs Buying New Police Vehicle

From The Tribune-Review by Jodi Weigand, February 6, 2014

Saxonburg Borough plans to spend up to $42,000 to buy and equip a police vehicle.

Council approved the purchase Wednesday.

Police Chief Joe Beachem said a $28,000 Ford Interceptor SUV is available on a state purchasing website.

Equipping the vehicle with lights, installing a barrier between the front and rear seats, adding the police department’s insignia to the exterior and other accessories will cost about $12,000, Mayor Pam Bauman said.

That’s about $2,000 less than the original quote.

“We pared down everything we could live without,” Beachem said.

The new car will replace the older of the department’s two police cars, which are 2005 and 2007 models.

The money will come from the borough’s capital expenses fund, about $48,900 of which is earmarked for vehicle purchases.

The borough hopes to sell the old the car, and the proceeds will be placed into the capital expenses fund.

Also related to the police department, Bauman noted that the department is moving into the space in the borough building formerly used by District Judge Sue Haggerty.

The borough tried to rent the space but, after a year with no success, council in January allowed the department to move.

The area gives the officers more space, and the former courtroom will be used for a training area, Bauman said.

The move should be complete by the end of the month, she said.

Bauman plans to turn an office at the entrance of the police department into the mayor’s office. The rest of the space will be used for storage.
