The man charged with shooting an off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer and suspected of a string of robberies is due in court on Tuesday.

Police say Kevin McClary, 19, shot officer Jon Dunham while trying to rob the officer’s South Charlotte apartment Sunday morning.

Police say McClary forced his way into Officer Dunham’s home and when he was confronted by the officer, McClary shot Dunham before running away. Authorities say Dunham’s young son was home at the time but was not injured.

He was taken into police custody Sunday after a day-long search by CMPD after the early morning break in at Officer Dunham’s home in the Emerald Bay Apartments.

According to court records, this weekend’s alleged robbery is not McClary’s first bout of legal troubles with the law.

McClary is also charged with committing three more robberies in Charlotte in the last week as well as robberies in York County, South Carolina, Dallas and North Carolina. He has an arrest record dating back to 2010.

The suspect recently pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to 12 to 15 months in prison. He was released in February of this year.

Mauricio-Salazar Peiti, 17, is also charged in connection with the robbery and is due in court on Tuesday.

Police say they are looking for Miguel Zelaya and Nahum Rea in connection to the robbery spree from last week.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
