13 officers have been indicted for helping a national gang operate a drug-trafficking and money-laundering scheme while in jail. The 13 female corrections officers at the Maryland state prison helped with the scheme that involved sex, luxury vehicles, and cash payments according to the Washington Post on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.

13 corrections officers have been indicted in drug-trafficking scheme.

The 13 officers were charged and indicted on Tuesday with federal racketeering, per federal prosecutors.

The guards allegedly helped leaders of the notorious Black Guerilla Family as they ran their drug enterprise in jail. Guards were said to have used their hair, shoes, and underwear to smuggle the inmates prescription pills, cellphones, other contraband, and pretty much anything they wanted.

Per the indictment, the Maryland state prison was described as a jailhouse “out of control.”

“The inmates literally took over ‘the asylum,’ and the detention centers became safe havens for BGF,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen E. Vogt, using shorthand for the prison gang’s name.

One inmate at the Maryland state prison impregnated four corrections officers. Two of those officers got the inmate’s first name – Tavon – tattooed on their bodies. One of the officers got it on her neck and the other got it on her wrist.

A spokesman for the prison said that 13 officers indicted have been suspended without pay. The department is going to recommend that all of them be fired.
