MAD RIVER TWP. — German Twp. Patrolman Jeremy Blum was supposed to be promoted to full time Sunday.
Instead, he’s at Miami Valley Hospital recovering from a gunshot wound after a New Years Day shootout that left a gunman and sheriff’s deputy dead.
German Twp. Police Chief William Dickerson said it initially appears Blum was shot in the arm and shoulder with a shotgun, and likely needs surgery.
Hospital officials said Blum was in fair condition Saturday evening.
The firefight occurred at Enon Beach trailer park in Mad River Twp. Saturday.
A sheriff’s deputy was also shot, and the gunman was shot dead in his trailer, according to Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly.
Saturday evening, video footage of Blum’s shooting was broadcast across local television stations. In still photos captured by the Springfield News-Sun, Blum was kneeling, firing his handgun at the trailer in a hail of bullets from numerous law enforcement officers.
He then fell over backwards with a visible wound to his arm, the photos show, before crawling out of the line of fire.
Dickerson said the photos illustrate the dangers of their job, and how dangerous and unpredictable it can be from one day to the next: “You never know,” he said.
