A candidate for the Mecklenburg County district attorney’s office begins a 60-day break from his regular life today — including political campaigning.
Andy Murray, a Republican who will face Democrat Michael Barnes in the November race to replace retiring Peter Gilchrist, begins serving a two-month stretch of active duty with the U.S. Coast Guard.
Murray has been called to duty to help with the Coast Guard’s efforts in the Gulf of Mexico, focusing on the BP oil spill cleanup. That duty will put Murray, who has been in the Coast Guard Reserves for 29 years and has the rank of commander, in the Gulf during the height of hurricane season.
Murray’s active-duty call-up is scheduled to end Sept. 24.
